Academia to the rescue?

Researchers will be designing a more secure, all-fiber-to-the-home Internet, according to Broadband Reports. It's not clear to me why the NSF has to spend another $7.5 million to do this. I thought the Internet2 project already illuminated the path forward. Anyway, without tossing Windows, I'm not sure how secure this new Net can be. One researcher makes it sound like a 100-year project. We don't have that long to fix things!
