OATH and OAuth
Is anyone in the identity managment business confused about the difference between OATH and OAuth? The names are quite similar. OATH, introduced in 2004 by Verisign, is an open standard. OAuth is an open source project from employees of Yahoo, Google, SixApart and others. OAuth was discussed at last weekend's Data Sharing Summit, and is better described here by Dare Obasanjo of Microsoft.

Adventures in OpenID
Last night I attended a press briefing by Ping Identity Corp., which announced signon.com. I took this as my opportunity to acquire an OpenID address -- it's scottmace.signon.com -- and to download InfoCard for a Windows XP computer. The InfoCard download took a half hour because I had to grab Microsoft's .Net Framework 3.0 in order to get it -- and inevitably, some patches. Then there was a plug-in to get (xmldap) to make it work with Firefox 2.0. In the end, InfoCard told me my Firefox didn't support it (huh?), and the one OpenID-enabled Web site I tried to use -- PeopleAggregator -- didn't seem able to help me modify my account there to recognize my new OpenID. I do believe OpenID and InfoCard will be very important steps forward in the Web, but the first such steps are for those with lowered expectations and patience. Loose coupling means lots of moving parts.
