Windows XP SP2 user experience

Kudos to Microsoft's Channel 9 for posting a reasonable video snapshot of some of the new security-focused user experience in Windows XP Service Pack 2. Not to say I think the new experience will be a cake walk. Quoting Rebecca Norlander: "You have to take an action. You can’t just hit okay, which was a common problem in the past." I predict screams from apathetic users, reverberating up through IT departments, as everyone tries to find quick ways around making decisions. It probably won't be long before someone comes out with a utility that detects security dialog boxes and automatically enters "allow all." I say that because so many users just don't want to be bothered to think about the security implications of what they're doing. This sort of utility will drive IT departments nuts. Ultimately, it probably opens the door a bit wider to some sort of advanced browser-based rich client alternative to Windows, which Microsoft may ultimately have to provide itself. Time will tell. But the average user isn't going to be happy in the meantime, having to think so hard about security on a daily basis.
